Ukraine Invites Russia to Black Sea Shelf

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said he believes Ukraine should develop joint projects with Russia in the fuel and energy sector. Speaking with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Istanbul, Yanukovych said resolving the issue of gas prices has made it possible for Ukraine to balance its budget this year. He said that Ukraine's national oil and gas company, Naftohaz Ukrayiny was now paying for gas with its own earned resources rather than with credit.
Yanukovych said that in the future, Russia and Ukraine could partner to not only transport gas, but in hydrocarbon production in general. "We are ready to swap assets with Russia to get into production in Russia. Ukraine also has such possibilities: for example, we see you as partners in producing gas and oil on the Black Sea shelf", Yanukovych said according to the Russian government's press office.
