Gazprom Starts Russia's First CBM Production Facility

Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom launched Friday the nation's first coal bed methane (CBM) production facility in the Taldinskoye coalfield, about 65km north of Novokuznetsk in southwestern Siberia.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, Gazprom chairman Alexey Millar and other high ranking officials.

''Today we have made a crucial step towards creating a new segment in the Russian fuel and energy complex – CBM production,'' Gazprom chairman Alexey Miller said.

Miller further stated that the project will ensure gas supply to the southern region of western Siberia, improve the environment and for the energy basis for further socio-economic development of the region with natural gas as primary feedstock.

Russia is endowed with vast reserves of CBM which is estimated at around 84 trillion cubic metres (cu m).

Taldinskoye coalfield in Kemerovo province is part of Russia's Kuznetsk basin (Kuzbass), one of the world's largest coal mining areas.
