Russia to use space technologies to monitor oil spills

February 27, 2014

Russia’s environment minister Sergey Donskoy has told the government commission for the fuel and energy complex that space technologies would help to monitor oil spills.

Donskoy said data supplied by companies involved in spills very much differed from data supplied by environmentalists and NGOs. Oil companies say around 10,000 tons of oil and contaminated water is spilt every year. The Rosprirodnadzor watchdog has a different figure, 50,000 tons, while environmentalists put the figure at 1.5mn tons.
