Ukraine stops paying for Russian gas, minister says

April 24, 2014

Given the uncertainty of the price of Russian gas, Ukraine has no opportunity to pay for it, Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Yuriy Prodan told reporters in Kyiv on April 23, Ukrinform has reported.

"Yesterday we did not pay for gas, today - I don't know yet," Prodan said. According to him, NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine sent Gazprom its proposals for the price, and it is USD 268.5 per 1,000 cubic meters. "Unfortunately, we have not received an answer so far, therefore there is no reason to determine the price," he said. As for Ukraine's readiness to switch to the prepay system, the minister voiced hope that this can be avoided. "We still want to agree on the principles that have been introduced since January 1 this year," Prodan said.
