Ukraine to charge more for Russian gas transit

March 28, 2014

Ukraine intends to raise the payment for Russian gas transportation via its territory to Europe, Sergei Sobolev, acting chairman of the Ukrainian political party Batkivshchina, said on March 27, as cited by local news agency UNIAN, Prime has reported.

“The negotiations have actually started, and we have stated a necessity to raise transit prices,” Sobolev said. Ukraine is in a situation when “the gas price corresponds to the world level, while the transit tariffs don’t,” he said. According to a 2009 Russian–Ukrainian treaty, the basic tariff for gas transit via Ukraine is floating and is calculated on the basis of the gas price and inflation in Europe.
