Shell To Drill $100 Million Well in Kalmykiya

Shell estimates that drilling a test well planned for the Barun-Yustinskoye block in Kalmykiya will cost $100 million, Shell Neftegaz Development (III) YEvgeniy Boyarshin said during public hearings.

Boyarshin said that the test well was Shell's first exploration project in Russia. The exploration work is planned for five years, during which time Shell will drill the well.

If a positive decision is made based on seismic surveys, the well will be about 7,000 meters deep, he said.

Volgogradnfetegeofizika General Director Valeriy Volkov said that the seismic work was being conducted using vibrating geophone units which he said were less harmful to humans and the environment than the explosives previously used.
