Russia, Ukraine, EU may hold gas talks in Warsaw on May 2

Russia, Ukraine, the European Union may hold trilateral gas talks in Warsaw on May 2, the Russian Energy Ministry said on Monday, April 28. “Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and European Union Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger achieved a preliminary agreement in a telephone conversation to hold trilateral consultations in order to resolve the crisis in Ukraine’s payments for Russian gas supplies,” the ministry said.

A source in the Energy Ministry told ITAR-TASS that Ukrainian acting Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Prodan, who is to attend the meeting as well, would make the decision on the issue on April 29. Novak earlier invited Oettinger to meet in Moscow on April 28 to discuss the matter. The EU commissioner reaffirmed the European Commission’s readiness to conduct multilateral gas talks at the political level.
