Russia To Submit Application to UN to Enlarge Arctic Shelf Borders

Russia plans to submit a bid to the UN in 2012 to recognize an increase in its Arctic borders, Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov said, during opening comments at the government Maritime Collegium.

Ivanov said that a second expedition to clarify the border of the Russian Arctic shelf would begin in a few days.

The radio station Ekho Moskvy repots that if all goes well, Russia will acquire over another 1 million kilometers in the Arctic, acreage roughly equal to one-tenth of all of Siberia. Moreover, Russia could gain the right to produce oil and gas in the triangle surrounded by Chukotka, Murmansk and the North Pole.
