Putin complains of Ukrainian debt to EU

April 11, 2014

President Vladimir Putin is deeply concerned about Ukraine’s U.S. $2.2 billion debt for Russian gas and suggested taking urgent steps to settle the problem in a letter to European leaders, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti on April 10.

“The letter signed by Putin was sent via diplomatic channels to the leaders of East and West European countries. A copy of the letter was sent to Brussels,” Peskov said. “Putin expressed deep concern due to the critical situation with Ukraine’s debt, and correspondingly about supplies of Russian gas.”

Peskov said that the president offered ways to settle the issue. “The suggestions are aimed at taking extreme measures, because the situation does not tolerate delays,” he said. Gazprom says Ukraine’s debt can mount further, to $5–6 billion by the end of 2014.
