Polish minister says European Commission should buy Russian gas

April 15, 2014

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has suggested that the European Commission should be given the authority to buy Russian gas. He said the European Union needed to establish an energy union as soon as possible so the Commission should represent the EU in trade issues such as gas purchases. This, said Sikorski, should make it possible to agree on a more acceptable gas price with Russia. Currently, Russia has 25-year agreements on gas deliveries with individual EU countries. The sides revise gas prices each year depending on oil prices.
