Late in June, the Gubkin Russian State Oil and Gas University announced the prize winners of the second contest of initiative projects of young scientists. Different from the first contest launched the last year, when grants for realization of research works in the most promising areas of the petroleum science were provided by a small private company Chuda Ltd., this time no oil and gas company apparently was willing to sponsor the event. Given that  many domestic and foreign companies are constantly stating that they are applying the latest achievements of the engineering thought, the lack of interest on their part to the research work done at the higher education institutes seems a bit odd.
Such being the situation, the University managed to carry on the initiative and support the young scientists by providing grants for realization of three projects in the course of year. Though these funds are not sufficient for large-scale research, the fact of such a contest does credit to the central oil and gas university of the country.
Experts, representatives of the departments “Oil and Gas Geology and Geophysics”, “Development of Oil and Gas Fields”, “Engineering Mechanics”, “Chemical Technology and Ecology” and “Economics and Management” unanimously awarded the first prize of 70,000 rubles to Larisa Samoilova, Deputy Head and senior lecturer of the sub-department “Development and Operation of Gas and Gas Condensate Fields”.  The experts mentioned a good basis of the project “Development of New Methods of Interpretation of Gas Hydrodynamic Surveys of Horizontal Gas Wells” and stressed that the sub-department has been performing well surveys for a long time. The project is aimed at development of new resource-saving technologies for survey of horizontal wells taking into account their design peculiarities, reduction of atmospheric emissions during gas-hydrodynamic surveys of horizontal gas wells. The technologies are recommended for implementation at the companies of the oil and gas sector, including underground storage facilities.
The second prize of 50,000 rubles was awarded to the assistant lecturer of the sub-department “Industrial Safety and Environmental Protection” Alla Voloshina and senior lecturer of this sub-department Maria Ivanova. Upon implementation, the project “Development of the Automated System of Evaluation and Training of Professionally Significant Psychophysiological Features of the Personnel of Hazardous Production Facilities of the Main Gas Transportation and Distribution System” may find application at hazardous production facilities of the main gas transportation and distribution system.
The experts showed their attention to the vital ecological research area by awarding the third prize of 30,000 rubles to the project “Development of Technologies and Substantiation of Selection of Means for Localization of Oil Spills at the Water Areas” of Anatoly Shlapakov,  postgraduate student of the sub-department “Machines and Equipment for the Oil and Gas Industry”. This research work sets as its targets the improvement of localization of possible oil spills at water areas, development of the patterns of sorbent application and estimate of costs of their use. Possibility of utilization of various types of equipment for sorbent application and collection from the water surface will be studied, and means for disposal of the used sorbents will be selected.
Projects in the area of geology and geophysics were united in a separate group this year; they are to be evaluated by one of the theme funds.
