The prestige associated with the engineering profession, which all but faded away in the Soviet period, is now resurging. Engineering is an occupation that is almost in vogue today, which is evidenced by competitive admissions at engineering colleges and personal observations of people working in the industry. Today engineers are valued again, along with their inventions needed for modernization of oil and gas production.
The Modern Technologies for Western Siberian Fuel and Energy Industry Forum, which took place in April 2007 in Tyumen, became a springboard for young scientists offering them a chance to showcase their R&D efforts to business and academic professionals. The success of that forum marked the beginning of a new tradition, and this year the conference was held for a second time. As before, the organizers included the Tyumen State Oil and Gas University (TSOGU) Engineering Education Association and the Society of Petrol Engineers (SPE) – in particular, its West Siberian branch headed by Andrei Korotchenko. Under Korotchenko’s leadership the branch makes efforts to popularize the profession of petrol engineer regionally and serves as a link between the academe and the business organizing seminars, exhibitions, conferences.
The assemblies where engineers present their ideas to colleagues enable them to share experiences and offer a chance to make their unique contribution to the pool of modern technologies for fuel and energy industry. The last conference was no exception in this respect. The young scientists presented their engineering experiments relating to most vital problems of development and operation of oil, gas and gas condensate fields, as well as know-how in the area of drilling, workover and operation of oil and gas wells, according to the TSOGU information center. The topical subjects discussed included, in particular, cost reduction of drilling tools, enhancing heavy crude production using branched wells, environmentally safe utilization of associated gas, managing field development using “intelligent wells,” etc.
The conference participants included young engineers from Bashkortostan (Ufa), Tatarstan (Almetyevsk), the Komi Republic (Ukhta), Tyumen and Moscow provinces, and Samara. The conference panels included “Oil and Gas Well Drilling,” “Development of Oil Fields,” “Development of Gas Fields,” and “Well Workover.” The panels were chaired by renowned academics and TSOGU department chairs: V. Ovchinnikov, S. Grachev, М. Karnaukhov, G. Zozulya.
There were five categories for competition: “Best Presentation,” “Practical Impact,” “Topical Issue,” “Original Idea,” “Innovative Approach.” The winners were awarded cash prizes.
The conference organizers express their gratitude to the companies sponsoring the event: the general sponsors Weatherford and Aquatic, NEWCO WELL Service, Halliburton, Schlumberger.
