Young Petroleum Engineers' Forum Started at Tyumen

The first stone in the foundation of a new forum for the upcoming oil and gas engineer generation has been laid - the young stars of Western Siberia now have a means of presenting their points of view to the world, and most importantly, to the industry's most significant companies.

By Anna Arutiunova

Established just two years ago on the basis of the Tyumen Oil and Gas University, the Tyumen regional subdivision of the Society of Petroleum Engineers "Young Engineers Society", headed by Andrei Korotchenko, has conducted its first conference in Tyumen titled "State-of-the-Art Technologies for Fuel and Power Sector of Western Siberia" on April 18th, in partnership with the University and with financial support from the Aquatic Company.

The Young Engineers Society, now counting more than 100 student members, is a social organization that is building the connecting bridge from the university academia to the actual petroleum industry - for example, annual meetings in the form of lectures are held with Halliburton representatives, KCA Deutag conducts excursions to drilling sites, and Weatherford assists with sponsorships.

Representatives of these companies, along with others from ROSING, TNK-BP, Aquatic, and the Department of Subsurface Management and Ecology of the Tyumen region all visited the conference with the same purpose of gauging the young oil and gas engineers' potential and finding qualified personnel for their projects, as well as catching up with innovative thinkers of the industry.

"The conference was very well organized, there were quite a few visitors. It's important to note the interest that representatives of leading foreign companies, such as Weatherford and Schlumberger, have taken in the theme of the conference along with local oil men", Ilya Bouyanovsky, the leading engineer at the Aquatic Company who was present at the conference as a member of the jury, told OGE.

Some 27 participants made presentations during the conference day. Graduate students from higher oil and gas education institutions from Russia and Kazakhstan, young scientists, representatives of industrial organizations and specialists from Tyumen, Moscow, Tomsk and the Ufa regions demonstrated original approaches to resolving problems of current concern in oil and gas field development, drilling, repair and reconstruction of oil and gas wells, and implementation of classification schemes during the planning of geological and technical activities.

"The conference made a very good impression," Bouyanovsky noted. "The students were very well prepared, the materials were presented at a modern level with the wide use of computer graphics and developed mathematical methods of processing experimental data and modeling the researched, rather complex processes of oil extraction and drilling. The majority of the presentaions were of current importance to Siberian oilmen, and some work was done on the actual oil producing establishments. Some separate presentations can be considered to be on the level of finished dissertation chapters", he added.

A significant step in young Western-Siberian scientists' professional growth, the conference was deemed so efficient that it will be held annually from now on, according to a decree issued by V.P. Ovchinnikov, the Director of the Tyumen Oil and Gas Institute, which is part of the university. In order to boost the prestige of the conference and take it to a higher level, the 2008 event will attract prize winners and laureates of regional youth scientific and technical conferences taking place at the leading oil and gas companies of Western Siberia, such as Surgutneftegaz, LUKOIL-Western Siberia, TNK-BP and others, as well as at foreign educational and scientific centers."

"I would like to wish the organizers best of luck in making the conference annual, further expanding the themes and number of participants by attracting students and young scientists from specialized colleges and scientific centers from Russia, as well as other countries with a well developed oil and gas industry", noted Bouyanovsky.

According to the university's governance, the diploma holders of this conference will receive priority in admissions to the university's post graduate program.
