Wartsila Energy Centers to Ensure Power and Heat Supply in Harsh Climate

Wartsila company (Finland) offers a comprehensive solution for both electric power and heat supply, using Wartsila-manufactured equipment.

The so-called energy centers incorporate a cogeneration plant based on Wartsila piston engines, and a boiler plant based on Wartsila boilers.

A boiler and a power plant are designed and installed as a comprehensive unit with a common control room, automation and water conditioning systems, etc. Generally, the hot water from the plant's heat-recovery boilers is supplied to a boiler plant to heat it up to the required temperature.

The centers are automatized with the use of computer logic, so they can be run without the operating staff's permanent attendance.

Natural and associated gas, diesel oil, petroleum residue, and crude oil may be used to fuel the unit. There is also an option of disposing used motor oil at one of the boiler plant's burners. In some cases, this factor could be of paramount importance in terms of environment safety.

A good case in point is Nyurbinsky mining and processing complex in Yakutia, where Wartsila has installed its energy center for 20 MW electric power plus 25 MW heat, operating on arctic-grade diesel fuel. The option of burning used motor oil turned out to be very economical, otherwise the used oil would have to be transported by a helicopter to Mirny 340 km away and then another 3,000 km to a refinery.

The main reason for Wartsila's winning the contract was the company's ability to manufacture and deliver the equipment, as well as to install and commission the energy center on a «turnkey» basis in the shortest time possible. At the construction site, a comprehensive unit for heat and electric power supply was installed in six months - an outstanding achievement given the harsh Siberian environment.

At present, another Wartsila energy center is being delivered to LUKOIL. It will be installed at the Varandeysky terminal in the Arkhangelsk region. The center includes a Wartsila 32 MW power plant and a 5 х 15 MW modular boiler plant. Crude oil will be used as the main type of fuel.

Customers benefit from the fact that the same company provides both a perfect energy system and a complete service package. Today, Wartsila's service network numbers over 6,000 experts in more than 60 countries, including Russia. The service package includes: operating and maintenance assistance, agreement-based after-sale service, on-site services, spare parts supply, technical support, and training.
