The UniTong System to Ensure Uninterrupted and Failure-free Tripping

V-Tech's UniTong is a combined iron roughneck and casing tong. It has an integrated mud skirt, dope and clean as well as a tool joint finder. 

It can be remotely operated from the driller's cabin without any personnel in the red zone on the drill floor.

Special features:

- The world's first multipower tong parked concentrically around the drillstring covering the entire operation regarding connection/disconnection of tubulars from 23/8 in. to 20 in.
-Safe handling of power slips, slips segments, master bushing and bottomhole assembly.
- 360° endless rotation, combining spinner and torque tong in one.
- Easily removable clamp houses to cover all kinds of tubulars.
- Soft-grip system suitable for CRA tubulars and delicate low torque connections.
- Torque/turn computer handling all kinds of tubulars.
- Torque range: 0-150,000 lb/ft.
- Integrated torque/turn computer.
- Unique thread compensation system used for connections/disconnections of all kinds of tubulars.
- Integrated and remote operated mudbucket, clean and dope (both pin and box) applicators.

The tong has been extensively tested at Statoil's Veslefrikk from August 20 until November 15, 2006 without interruptions or break down. The test included the following:

- pulling out old 95/8 in. casing;
- pulling out old 133/8 in. casing;
- running 133/8 in. casing (VAM TOP);
- running 95/8 in. casing (VAM TOP);
- breakup old stands with high torque;
- building stands;
- tripping with 27/8 in. DP, 31/2 in. DP, 5 in. DP, 51/2 in. DP, 65/8 in. DP;
- bottomhole assembly 171/2 in., 121/4 in. (91/2 in. DC).
- drilling with 5 in., 51/2 in. DP;
- handling old types of crossovers and pup joints;
- Running, cleanup string multidimensional OD.
- Running 4,400 m completion string 51/2 in. (VAM TOP).
- Running seven simultaneous control lines using cable guide on the above completion string.
- Running liner 51/2 in. VAM TOP.
- Mudbucket 5 in. DP, 51/2 in. DP, 31/2 in. DP.
- Automatic clean and dope on pin 27/8 in. DP, 31/2 in. DP, 5 in. DP, 51/2 in. DP, 65/8 in. DP, 8 in. DC, 91/2 in. DC.
- Perforation; RAS (rig assistant snubbing) 27/8 in. DP, with a total run of 16,200 m.
