ONS presents Innovation awards

The significance of innovation for today’s industry was stressed by Lars Talka, chair of the ONS Foundation, when he presented the ONS 2008 innovation awards today.
Welltec won the Innovation Award for its Well Miller® reverse circulating bit, while Cubility was awarded the SME Innovation Award for its MudCube™ enhanced fluid cleaning system.

They were among 10 finalists from 91 approved applications for the prizes, which were instituted in 1982 and widened in 2004 with an award for small and medium-sized enterprises.

A new feature of this year’s awards is that companies not represented in the ONS exhibition have been able to apply. However, both winners have stands at the show.

The second Special Innovation Award was presented to John C Mihm, former engineering manager for Phillips Petroleum in Norway, who played a key role in the important Ekofisk waterflood project.

Innovation content was the key criterion applied in judging the applications by the international jury, which was chaired by Rolf Wiborg from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

“We were pleased that 33 applications came from abroad – better than previous years,” said Mr Wiborg during the innovation awards lunch when the presentations were made.

“But there is still a huge room for improvement. We were saddened by the fact that almost none of the nominations addressed new energy forms.

“However, the many good candidates gave us a hard time selecting finalists and winners. A couple of those who failed to make it to the final have a lot of potential to be winners.”

The five finalists for the Innovation Award were ABB, Cameron, FMC Technologies and Sevan Marine as well as Welltec.

In addition to Cubility, Pure Technologies, ReelWell, Remora and Wirescan were selected as finalists for the SME Innovation Award.
