Syzran Refinery Launches Production of Euro-3 Diesel Fuel

At the beginning of May, Syzran Refinery shipped first 2,000 tonnes of EN590 diesel fuel (grade C) that meets the Euro-3 standards.

To improve the core characteristics of diesel fuel, a set of special additives is used in the production process, which allows enhancing detergent, protective, and ecological properties.

Major benefits of EN590 diesel include better ignition and combustion, lower wear of key engine systems, and longer cycle of motor oil change. Advanced protective properties of the fuel ensure reduced sludge impacts on injection nozzles and catalysts. Furthermore, exhaust fumes of Euro-3 diesel have a significantly lower content of sulphur, nitrogen, and other toxic compounds.

Assuming an annual Euro-3 diesel output of 6.5 mln tonnes at Syzran Refinery, specialists believe that switching to this fuel would allow reducing gross exhaust emission of sulphur compounds by 7,000 tonnes a year, and substantially improving the environmental situation.

The recently commissioned Central Laboratory enjoys top-of-the-line equipment, ensuring ongoing and efficient control over the quality of petroleum products. According to the management, in the near future, Syzran Refinery will launch the construction of an isomerization unit that will enable the plant to produce gasoline meeting the most rigorous European standards. In addition, by 2009, the refinery plans to commence Euro-4 diesel production. Upgrading the core processes to Euro-5 will be among the plant’s top priorities in the years to follow.

According to General Director of Syzran Refinery Nikolay Lyadin, the launch of Euro-3 diesel fuel production is indeed a turning point for the plant: “This further confirms the strong competitive position of Syzran Refinery. We have achieved a major goal with the comprehensive upgrade program adopted by Rosneft, which is aimed at increasing the production of quality fuels meeting current international standards, constantly improving the share of higher-value-added products, and reducing environmental threats”.

As was previously reported, in April 2008, Achinsk Refinery commenced production of Premium Euro-95 gasoline meeting the Euro-4 requirements. A month earlier, the Russian National Research Institute of Oil Refining completed testing of this gasoline grade. On April 10, first commercial Premium Euro-95 output was produced at Achinsk Refinery (over 3,000 tonnes), which was shipped to the Moscow Metropolitan Area the next day. Total output of Euro-4 gasoline is planned at about 15 thousand tonnes.
