Turkmens Proposes Amendments to Trans Afghan Project

Issues related to preparation of a framework agreement on construction of a transnational gas pipeline were discussed in Islamabad on April 20-25 as part of the 10th meeting of the steering committee of the Trans-Afghan gas pipeline project. The delegation of Turkmenistan led by the minister of oil and gas industry and mineral resources, Baymyrat Khojamuhammedov, attended the meeting.

The Turkmen side has proposed some amendments to the draft framework agreement taking into account its position on the sale of gas exclusively on the border of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH) reports. Delegations of India and Pakistan also proposed amendments to the document. The sides agreed to submit the draft agreement to their governments for approval.

"As regards terms and conditions of the draft agreement, the discussions focused on the gas price issue. In this regard, the meeting participants agreed that the gas price should be formed on the basis of the current situation on the global energy market," the TDH said.

The sides also agreed to continue discussions at the level of technical groups to bring their positions closer. The first meeting of experts is scheduled for the next month. On the Indian side suggestion, the Trans-Afghan gas pipeline project steering committee will gather in Delhi coming autumn.
