Geotrace and Reliance Work on Improving Seismic Resolution

Geotrace, a leading reservoir services company that provides subsurface imaging solutions to the oil and gas industry worldwide, is working with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL)—the largest private sector company in India—to explore ways to improve seismic resolution, an ongoing challenge in the oil industry.

As part of that effort, Geotrace recently exhibited in the 7th conference and Exposition of Society of Petroleum Geophysicists, Hyderabad, India.  With more than 2,000 delegates from India and abroad attending the conference, a large number of visitors expressed interest in Geotrace’s products.

S.K. Bhandari of Reliance Industries Ltd and Renzo Cividin of Geotrace authored a paper titled, "Improving Seismic Resolution through High Frequency Imaging," that was presented during one of the conference’s technical sessions. The paper discusses the application of Geotrace's High Frequency Imaging™ (HFI) as a tool for improving resolution.

The Geotrace HFI processing method has been applied successfully in many exploratory and field development areas resulting either in new discoveries or enhancement of production.

“It should be possible to resolve anything that is detectable on seismic section by some method,” Bhandari said during the presentation.

In their paper, Cividin and Bhandari discuss the challenge of resolving thin

layers of rock through imaging—an obstacle faced specifically by the Indian oil industry. The article described how Geotrace's HFI attempts to change the relative signal-to-noise (SN) ratio of the high frequency data so it rises above the noise level, increasing the usable bandwidth and the ability to evaluate thin reservoir beds.

The HFI processing technique used to enhance the frequency of the data is of paramount importance in the exploration and development of thin reservoirs," Cividin said.

Bhandari added, "As with most seismic processing methods, there is no one 'silver bullet' that will achieve the overall goal. But this is yet another weapon in the seismic arsenal worth trying.”

Geotrace has carried out HFI processing on data for one of the RIL blocks in India, and HFI processing is underway for two other blocks.  RIL is India’s first private sector company in the E&P space to discover large gas reserves and is positioned as one of the largest value creators in the upstream oil and gas sector.

Headquartered in Houston, Geotrace assists clients in optimizing oil and gas production and managing exploration risks through the use of a suite of highly engineered proprietary software tools that integrate core, well log and other subsurface data to image and define relevant properties of land, marine and transition zone reservoirs.
